A limited edition Dartmoor art print by Glen Middleham, created in collaboration with Gather & Moor to celebrate the rich history of Princetown and the landscape around Nun’s Cross.
The Wicked Winds O’er Dartmoor Swept
The Wicked Winds O’er Dartmoor Swept is an intricate collage celebrating Princetown and nearby Nun’s Cross and Nun’s Cross Farm – their rich, layered histories and closely connected stories. Drawing on a carefully curated collection of vintage photographs, printed ephemera, maps, letterbox stamps and other historic imagery, the piece is assembled by hand and coloured with watercolours to create a richly textured interpretation of the landscape.
Capturing the same atmospheric landscape that was such an inspiration to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who worked on The Hound of the Baskervilles while staying at The Duchy Hotel – it’s only right that Sir Arthur himself, the hound, Sherlock Holmes and The Duchy Hotel be incorporated into the piece. Can you spot them?
The piece is a foreboding yet captivating Dartmoor scene, and it’s only when you study it – the more you look, the more you see – that you notice the archive ephemera woven into the composition. From historic tickets for the Princetown railway and the locomotive itself, to Dartmoor Prison, the modern brewery, John Hooper, who built Nun’s Cross Farm, and a selection of local wildlife – including Dartmoor’s endangered curlew population, which the Duchy of Cornwall has worked to support in its recovery.
