How do you combine Moulin Rouge, David Bowie, four iconic words from a film, and a favourite song lyric into a single artwork? That was the challenge behind this recent private commission.
Glen was delighted to be commissioned to create this highly personal artwork as a surprise gift for a client's husband.
The brief brought together a number of much-loved themes:Moulin Rouge, David Bowie, the film's iconic four-word mantra, and a lyric from Bowie's rendition ofNature Boy. The client, a fan of Glen's collage work, was looking for something distinctive, imaginative and full of character, and was happy to give Glen creative freedom in interpreting the brief.
Inspired by an oversized vintage book, Glen's response was to create a theatrical diorama that celebrated both the visual spectacle ofMoulin Rougeand Bowie's legendary flair for performance. Carefully constructed layers created depth and drama, while the various personal references were thoughtfully woven throughout the piece.
The finished artwork captured everything the client had hoped for and more. When it was unveiled, she was deeply moved by how perfectly it reflected the interests, memories and personality of her husband, who was equally delighted with the gift.
